(BEIJING, June 15) -- A music ensemble comprising professional singers and volunteers from the campuses and other sectors of society was formed in Beijing Thursday night to boost volunteerism.
The troupe will go to the communities, parks, plants and mines to spread tunes for the Olympic Games.
The formation of the ensemble coincided with a students' campaign to sing for the Olympics. About 1,500 Games-time volunteer applicants and representatives of the college students attended a launching ceremony in Beijing on Thursday.
According to the organizers, the singing activity is part of the campaign "Welcome the Olympics, Improve Manners and Foster New Attitudes" to promote volunteerism among the citizens across the country and create a favorable atmosphere for the forthcoming Olympics.
Beijing started recruiting Games-time volunteers on August 28, 2006. Although only about 100,000 Games-time volunteers are needed, more than 520,000 people had registered as of June 11. Among them over 300,000 are from Beijing, 190,000 from other provinces and municipalities, and 20,000 from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas.
