Beijing starts recruiting volunteers for urban services (photo attached)

(BEIJING, June 18) -- The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) and the Coordination Group for the Beijing Olympic Games Volunteer Work kicked off the recruitment of volunteers for urban services during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games on Monday.

According to the announcement made at the press conference at the Beijing Olympic Media Center, the volunteers for urban services are the volunteers who will provide voluntary services at the designated stations around the competition venues and the key areas of the city to ensure the smooth progress of the Games and regular operations of the city during the next Olympic Summer Games and Paralympic Games.

During the Games, some 500 service stations will be set up in Beijing's districts and counties and 400,000 volunteers for urban services will be needed to work for the members of the Olympic Family, spectators, tourists as well as the ordinary citizens in such areas as information, emergency response and translation.

The registration process starts now and will end in June 2008.

The organizers stressed that the applicants should be willing to provide voluntary services for the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympic Games; must be born before June 30, 1994 (anyone who is under 18 years old needs his legal agent's consent); abide by the laws and regulations of the People's Republic of China; be able to take part in the pre-Games training and related activities; be able to provide three working shifts of services (each shift not over four hours) or more during the Olympics and Paralympics and must have the knowledge and skills needed for the designated positions.

The recruitment procedure includes the steps of registration, review, examination, background check and the acceptance notice, whose issue will end in July 2008.

The applicants can register on the websites designated by the city's districts and counties where they reside, or submit paper forms provided by the youth leagues of their neighborhoods.
