Thomas and Uber Cups to split in 2010

GLASGOW, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Thomas and Uber Cups would be held in different cities of Malaysia in 2010, the badminton world governing body BWF announced at the Sudirman Cup world mixed team championships on Saturday.

Vice president of BWF Robin Bryant told a press conference that the Thomas Cup would be held in Kuala Lumpur while Ipoh, northwest of Kuala Lumpur, would play the hosts to the women's event.

The decision, made at the BWF annual meeting convened on Saturday morning, means that the two events will be split for the first time since 1984 when they were united playing in a same venue.

"The events were traditionally held together but they'll be separated for the next period," Bryant said.

"Fundamentally, we're attempting to build up the women's side of the game, not the men's side."

Last year in December, BWF first announced to hold the two tournaments in a different time to promote the women's event but did not decide the venues then.
